Sunday Wrap Up: “Preaching Colossians is hard work” (Video)

The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldier (Live on Jools Holland)

One of the great joys of Direct TV is my season pass for Jools Holland. On this occasion they had a pretty packed lineup, John Legend, Amy Winehouse, The Raconteurs and Muse. Hands down, Raconteurs stole the show, their performance of Broken Boy Soldier was incredible. Enjoy.

As I watched this incredibly challenging and encouraging video of Matt Chandler discussing where he’s at with his sudden fight with a brain tumor, I felt such simultaneous heartache and joy seeing this warrior of our faith stand firm in Christ. Matt has had such a huge impact on me from afar, I’ve never met him or even seen him in person, but his impact on my faith cannot be overstated. It’s humbling to hear his words, it’s encouraging to see him live it out and it’s incredibly moving to see the love and wisdom shared through his family.

For those of you who don’t know, Matt Chandler is pastor of The Village Church and fellow member of the Acts 29 Network. According to the latest updates Matt is doing well, is out of the ICU and results should be back from tests on the tumor in the middle of this week.

Many of you are aware that I don’t get paid for ministry work, I am what I like to call, full time volunteer. Yesterday I made a promo video for the iPhone app I work on that pays the bills. I did the soundtrack in GarageBand, great for quick little beats.

If you are interested in downloading the app we have a full version and free version on iTunes. Free version has static instead of animated radar, doesn’t let you set any radar options (transparency, speed), doesn’t let you drop pins on the map to get weather in precise locations and only lets you save 2 favorites. Go for the paid!

Came across this video of a new Jesus Culture song on shawnw.org . This song “Burning Ones” is off the new Jesus Culture album Consumed. It’s a pretty killer song, I dig the vibe, a really cool tag section at the end. Overall I was really impressed, looking forward to checking out the album.

Matt Redman: “Too much romantic imagery” in worship

One thing I love about Matt Redman is his passion for truth, for the gospel and for worship to be Christ centered. In this brief interview clip Matt discusses the over use of romantic imagery in worship songs and how that may negatively impact men in our church. I believe that to be true and to that point I remember attending one popular conference where at the end they played some worship song as people held hands and skipped down the aisle singing “we’re getting married”, an illusion to Jesus being the church’s bridegroom of course. It was one of the most uncomfortable worship moments of my life.

Adam Pasion Interview Part 1 (New music)

I recently sat down with Adam Pasion who’s new album “O Hear the Rattling” (iTunes) seriously impressed me. The music to me is best described as dark folk, very rich lyrically, with dark melodies and full folk string instrumentation and groove. I’ve not heard another Christian album like this at all, and by Christian album I just mean Adam is a Christian who wants to see Christ glorified in his music, but these aren’t necessarily corporate worship songs.

I enjoy shedding light on great music that many have not heard and I think this fits the bill. Adam is a great guy, incredibly humble and talented. In part 1 of the interview we talk about where Adam grew up, the vision behind the record and the story behind one of my favorite tracks “Broken Binds Us.” I also give a sneak peak of the tune in the video.

Video: Ryan Delmore “You Are Strong” in studio

Ran across this beautiful song of Ryan’s on his blog. One thing that I just love about Ryan is how natural and effortless his songs come across. I never get the sense that his songs were crafted for any particular audience but that he just let out on paper and through music what’s in his heart. Here’s an excerpt from his blog regarding this song:

Recently I spent some time with a friend in Tennessee who discovered that his father in law was diagnosed with lung cancer. The shock and pain that a sentence like that brings is devastating to family and friends alike. It made me think of some recent suffering Ryan went through over the holidays with a bulging disc on his spine. During the many months that Ryan was writhing in pain he had to consider the issue of suffering in relation to our loving God and as a result wrote this song. Many people gathered to pray for Ryan, but he was never healed. Ryan had to go to the hospital on a few occasions for heavy medication. It was really sad to see him spend Christmas drugged on the floor in chronic pain instead of playing with his kids. Through it all Ryan questioned God and through it all he could sense God’s presence and love. I wanted Ryan to record this song so that I could share it with my friend who’s father in law is suffering through chemo and all that cancer brings. Hopefully this song can be a banner of encouragement to those who are weary and burdened with heavy suffering.

Barcelona sings to the fish at Kuroshio Sea and it’s beautiful

An absolutely beautiful video was posted on You Tube of Kuroshio Sea, the world’s second largest aquarium, using Barcelona’s “Please Don’t Go” as the music. The still shot of the tank with the shadowed figures in front is just visually awesome, and then the Barcelona song fits it so well. A stirring video for sure. If you don’t have Barcelona’s Absolutes album go pick it up, it’s a killer record.

Top 5 Favorite Michael Jackson songs

In remembrance of Michael Jackson who passed yesterday, I thought I’d do a Top 5 with my favorite MJ songs of all time. I grew up singing and dancing to Michael Jackson, I have a lot of respect for his music ability and a lot of sadness for how he lived his life.

1. Thriller

Where else is there to start. The best music video of all time, an incredible song and it gave me nightmares when I was a kid, but I loved it.

2. Smooth Criminal

Another epic video, will anyone ever be able to do music videos like this guy again? I doubt it. Great song as well, I can always jam to this song.

3. Billie Jean

Man I can remember dancing to this song in my room. This video always tripped me out, I still don’t think I really get it. But talk about epic, sidewalk lighting up, I mean…brilliant. I can’t say enough about his sense of melody, it’s incredible.

4. Dirty Diana

I’ve never been in a concert atmosphere like this and I really wonder if I’ll ever have the opportunity in my life to experience it. And no I’m not going into the Jonas brothers teenage mosh pit.

5. Beat It

This was back in the day when gangs just had break dancing battles to settle turf wars. Simpler times.

Farewell Michael, you inspired me as a kid and I’m not sure this world will ever see or hear anyone quite like you again.

Layin down tracks: Ryan Leslie Makes “Addiction”

Thanks Brett for passing this onto me. This is a pretty sick display of ability by Ryan Leslie. It reminds me of what I look like when composing. I always dress in a full suit and wear sunglasses in my bedroom, dancin around, shouting out to the nonexistent crowd. My wife loves it.

Oh wait actually it’s more of me in my pj’s, haven’t taken a shower in a couple days, chained to my desk, pounding Hansen’s natural soda, wondering if I’ll ever have another creative thought in my life. Yeah, stark contrast. Watch and enjoy.

This is one of the best records of the year so far and will be right up there at the end. If you are into MGMT then you will dig Phoenix. Easily the best French band I’ve ever heard, though I couldn’t name another one, even still they take the top spot. They just released their record Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and I highly recommend picking it up. Here’s a video to give you a nice sample.

Pastor Anderson pisseth all over himself after getting tazed

Pastor Anderson, the “baptist preacher” (quotes intentional) famous for his “pisseth against the wall” and amazing guitar lessons videos, just came out with another brilliant video. This time he tells the story of him getting tazed by border patrol agents after he refused to let them search his car. Can someone please give this guy a reality show? Few things I learned about Pastor Anderson here:

He’s just as passionate about his right to be a moron and refuse to follow federal agents instructions as he is about proper male urinating technique.
He’s not that tough, that’s not a beating.
He drives a car even though cars are not specifically mentioned as profitable in the KJV bible.

I’ve hit the wall with my current music selection, I need a refresh. Enter my friend John Mark McMillan. We were chatting about him coming out to Phoenix again to play some shows(gonna be off the chain BTW) and he mentioned his former bass player’s new band Flagship (formerly Flagship Brigade). Check Flagship out on myspace, they are incredible! I’m just bummed that there newer stuff doesn’t seem to be released yet.

But you can get their older EP “We Are Lions” on Amazon and Snocap downloads on their myspace. Here are some live videos of them performing. Killer stuff and ironically some tunes come across very Killers’ish, as in the band.

Video: Andrew Bird – “A Nervous Tic Motion” Live Looping

Live looping is a technique made more popular recently by people like KT Tunstall, but it’s not really a new concept at all. Basically it consists of one or more musicians capturing live audio in a loop and adding more layers on to the loop throughout the song. Usually accomplished with something like a Boss Loop Station or Electro-Harmonix Super Multi-Track Looper. If done well it can be an incredible thing to see and hear.

Andrew Bird is an incredible musician, vocalist, live looper and whistler. In fact I’ve not heard many give as clean and on pitch whistle as Andrew. Noble Beast is Andrew’s latest album and it sounds incredible.

Incredible Radiohead performance at Grammys

I just started going through all the performances at the Grammys on my dvr and I was absolutely blown away by Radiohead’s performance. They played 15 Step off their In Rainbows album (which is phenomenal) with a full marching band. Just watch and be amazed.

My bro sent me this video of MGMT live on Abbey Road. Electric Feel is just a killer song and this is a killer performance. Skip to 1:30 to get to the music. This video has been tripping out a bit showing “unavailable” randomly. So if you first don’t succeed, try try again.

Video: Electro-Harmonix ‘Voice Box’ pedal

This new Voice Box pedal from Electro-Harmonix looks awesome! Basically you route your mic and guitar through it and you’re able to pitch match harmonies and different vocal effects. It has a vocoder and built in reverb. I pretty much love everything Electro-Harmonix makes but this looks really fun. I’d love to get my hands on one of these. Retails for around $215.
