This was recorded live at the Burn Bright conference here in Phoenix last year which I had the pleasure attending and blogging from. This was my favorite moment of the conference and really embodies what I still love about Vineyard worship. No pretense…none at all, just some great people, with some great talent laying their hearts out there in a beautiful and inspiring way.

And if I haven’t said it before, my friend Ryan Delmore has written here one of the best worship songs I’ve heard in the last 5 years or so. Doesn’t get much better than this tune, well done my friend. Chris, Mark, Kirsten and band killed it! Oh and James, yes you were layin down a mean bass

My pastor, Aaron Dailey, and brother in law, Josh Dailey, run a ministry called Pure Path here in Phoenix and they just released a video teaching series called 13th Floor. These are some of the most powerful, gut wrenching videos I’ve seen about sexual abuse, sex trafficking, abortion and other painful topics. Very proud of these guys as well as those in the videos, most of whom are good friends and/or members of our church, Life Connection Church.

We are a small church of 150 when filled, but we have some of the most talented, passionate and committed folks I’ve ever known. They are faithful with what they have and use it to reach those they’ve been called to serve. Love these folks.

For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
(2 Corinthians 4:17-18 ESV)

Seeing people live this verse out is the most humbling, convicting thing, especially when the “light momentary affliction” is far worse than anything I’ve ever experienced. God bless this family, and all glory, honor and praise to Jesus for his sovereign goodness and loving hand on this family.

That’s exactly what happened at my church in Phoenix AZ. We planted in the poorest area of downtown Phoenix and just celebrated our 9 year anniversary this past weekend. Most pastors in this area think we’re crazy to be here, most churches run out of this neighborhood because it’s incredibly difficult to support a church here. We’ve seen many churches come and go, but here we are…9 years later.

God hasn’t just sustained us, but he’s sent us here to minister to this neighborhood and people. This year he gave us vision and a some in our church the heart to start what we call the Alhambra Project. 2 people in our church with the means to live a much more comfortable and safe(more on that below) lifestyle felt the call of God to live in this neighborhood to better serve the people.

I’ve not heard of many (any) that have or would even consider doing this. It’s incredibly humbling to be an elder over seeing this, but to be honest, we’re in uncharted waters and are expecting lots of storms and trusting in many more miracles. The first week after moving in, the house was robbed. No one said this would be easy. Please keep Life Connection Church, downtown Phoenix and our Alhambra Project leaders in prayer.

When this album start streaming for free a couple weeks before it’s June 21st release date I had my browser looping the album almost non stop. Now that I have the album I’m still listening to it on repeat.

This is one of the most moving and sonically brilliant records I’ve ever heard. It inspires, saddens, excites…you can be sure that you will be unable to listen in a pedestrian nature. Bon Iver brings you into each song and when it’s over it’s nearly impossible to shake, you want to start it all over.

I don’t know where Bon Iver might go from here, but it’s hard to see how this record isn’t the pinnacle of the band’s career. This record is quite simply a masterpiece that’s only outdone by the live performances. Buy the record, watch the live performance below and let your ears thank you later.

Granular synthesis, as described by Iannis Xenakis, imagined sound as constructed from elementary elements. In the work of Zimoun, elementary sonic grains are physical. An undulating wall of cardboard rubs surfaces against one another to form a chorus of sound. Cotton balls roll against boxes in throaty clouds of sound. Wires wriggle like some sort of insect antennae. Below, the newest video of his work, in which cardboard petals form an animated wall of rustling noise.

The results, powered by simple DC motors in kinetic musical action, recall some kind of natural, organic colony. Assembled in structures sculptural and architectural, this is real-world synthesis, constructed mechanically in motion.

The work is elegant, graceful, and witty, not cold and aggressive as are so many sound works. The sounds can be delicate – even assemblages of electric fans.

Zimoun is a Swiss artist whose work has been presented around the US and Europe. He also records music, some of it in surround.

I recently heard for the first time Justin Vernon’s (Bon Iver) song “Sides” and it is incredibly moving. It’s a story of a gay guy coming to the church hurt, coming each Sunday and finally confessing his past trauma (beaten up) and sexual sin. The priest turns the guy away saying he can’t help him and that his beating was him “paying for his sins.” Sad. Frustrating.

The good news of the gospel is that payment was made for us on the cross. The good news is that in Jesus we not only have forgiveness of sin but he intercedes for us and has sent his Holy Spirit to work in our hearts to change us, no matter how deep or pervasive the sin. Old desires die, new ones come to life. Regeneration.

This song is a good reminder of how not to do it, and how way too many do. I’m not saying this song does a good job of communicating the gospel in response to the church, it doesn’t, but it does expose how bad of a job we often do.

So Lee Green wrote a rhyme around the entire Gospel story and we used The Door as the instrumentation behind it. You’ll have to forgive some of the instrumentation mistakes, I hope it doesn’t ruin Lee’s incredible, powerful, convicting and moving words.
I first heard of these guys when I saw them live, opening for We Were Promised Jetpacks (another good band if you’re into angry Scottish rock). To be honest Bear Hands stole the show for me. Really interesting songwriting and the vocals from Dylan Rau reminded me a lot of MGMT’s early/good stuff. The drummer, TJ Orscher, keys in on some real unique and interesting drum patterns.

After I heard the opening song Crime Pays from their latest record, it was clear they’d matured a lot musically and I nabbed the record. They’ve added some synth/electronic elements to their existing alt punk vibe and it feels like they just completed what had been a rough draft as far as their instrumental arrangements. I love seeing young guys play their own music with conviction and these guys do it. Refreshing to hear and see. Video of one of their performances below.

Take a look at this snippet from Ted talking about “restoration”. I’m gonna have to break this down in bites below.

Everybody knows everyone sins. The differentiation between the church and everyone else is that we should respond with restoration, healing, hope life to people’s sin condition.

Ehhhhh not quite. Everyone knows that everyone makes mistakes, yes. But far fewer people believe that we are sinners who willfully, passionately violate the word, will and call of our sovereign God. That distinction paves the way for a radically different perspective and definition of the word “restoration”.

What happened to me was, I saw Martha Stewart get restored, I saw Michael Vick get restored, I saw Tiger woods get restored, I saw David Letterman get restored by their organizations, none of which say they believe in forgiveness, love or restoration.

Now we start to see that when Ted says “restored” he just means “rehired“. None of the organizations Ted refers to views their employees actions as terrible sins that required repentance to God and a restoration back to Christ. They see mistakes that require a debt paid to society. The church should see sin that is a debt to God that can only be covered through Jesus’ death on the cross. HUGE difference.

I’m not even sure Ted’s points have technical merit. Pastor’s who cheat on their wives with assistants, get divorced, run out on any accountability and get rehired at another church are all over the place. Those stories are a dime a dozen. So if Ted is looking to the world as a model of restoration, I’d conclude the exact opposite, the church has learned a whole heck of a lot from the world in how we should restore. If the employee(pastor) is talented, it doesn’t matter if he’s repentant and humble, as long as it “benefits” the church they’ll get another gig.

Finally, the irony is not lost on me that the guy lecturing the church about restoration is the same guy that completely rejected the restoration plan he was on and rebelled against the leadership he had submitted to. But hey, might be just a coincidence.

OK I’m done. What do you think of Ted’s comments?

I was introduced to Foals through my band mates (tip of the hat Caleb & Jon) and I can’t believe I’m just finding out about these guys now. These guys have a little bit of everything. The complex, tight grooves with lots of single note melodic guitar parts remind me of Minus the Bear, but they have a punk edge to them as well. A surprising horn section keeps you on your toes and really every song has some surprises. These videos are them playing 2 of my favorite songs off their debut album Antidotes on Later with Jools Holland. They just murder the place. Their latest album Total Life Forever has some great stuff on it too, a bit more electronic feel to it, which I dig.

Without a doubt, one of the most talented and humble cats I know is Lee Green. I had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with him at my church (Life Connection Church) in Phoenix a couple years back. This guy loves Jesus, loves the church and it’s an honor to be able to serve Jesus along side him. This New Year’s day, Life Connection Church will be hosting Lee Green’s album pre-release party. Lee will be performing live along with some other friends. If you are in the area you gotta check it out, trust me.
