One Righteous Man is one of my favorites off of Red Letter’s self titled album. The band is led by Pastor Joel Brown of Mars Hill Seattle. The record is full of incredible tunes, most in an alt-rock vein that you don’t hear in worship music much, but that’s to be expected coming out of Mars Hill.

This loop arrangement follows pretty closely Red Letter’s arrangement, the major differences being the drum pattern and pad instrumentation. In the second instrumental I actually sing over the second half of it, if I mix one of our live performances of it, I’ll link it from here so you can hear that section.

Audio: How we do instrumental Puritan prayer readings in service

For quite some time we’ve regularly been opening our services with a Puritan prayer reading. We do these readings over a variety of instrumental pieces, usually riff ideas that we’ve been playing around with that sometimes turn into full songs. In this case we just took a riff from one of the songs we were playing in the set, but a lot of you have asked to hear what these readings sound like, so here ya go.

This prayer was recorded live at Life Connection Church on 5/15/11 and is called Fullness In Christ and can be found in the book The Valley of Vision – A Collection of Puritan prayers

This arrangement is based off the fantastic arrangement done by Ascend the Hill. Instrumentation is obviously quite different and I take a few different turns in the song as far as the parts go. But if you download Ascend the Hill’s version you’ll get a good feel for the melody tempo and phrasing.

This is really quite a simple loop, warm pads, a sparse drum beat, small cello section, and a little rhythmic sequence. Should be fairly easy to play along to and modify.

Video: “The Door” – Our Rising Sound feat. Lee Green

Early on I was toying with the idea of playing All the Bright Lights song “The Door” for our Easter service. I didn’t know how it would quite work, it being 95% instrumental. I also knew I wanted to have my man Lee Green rhyme at some point in the service…eventually my slow brain realized we could blend the two together.

So Lee Green wrote a rhyme around the entire Gospel story and we used The Door as the instrumentation behind it. You’ll have to forgive some of the instrumentation mistakes, I hope it doesn’t ruin Lee’s incredible, powerful, convicting and moving words. Hopefully we’ll be doing more collaborating going forward, love me some Lee Green!

For quite some time I’ve have an idea of working on new and very different arrangements of classic Vineyard songs. This arrangement sprung up almost out of necessity and was a lot of fun to work on. I Want to Know You was a very popular song in the Vineyard that was recorded by Brian Doerksen a little over 20 years ago. I haven’t been able to find anywhere on the web where you can hear or buy any of Brian’s original arrangements for this. I can’t even find any covers of it. (By the way this is not the same song as recorded by Sonicflood) I briefly looked through my mom’s old Vineyard cd collection and found a recording of it on “Jesus Alone: Live Worship Songs of the Langley Vineyard“, which isn’t the original recording but it’s pretty close to the original arrangement.

This arrangement has very little in common with those arrangements anyway. I made changes to pretty much everything though the melody stays largely in tact with the exception of the chorus. There are some chord changes and an additional bridge/instrumental section(this song has always needed a C section in my opinion). I do have a live recording of us performing this that I can make available if anyone is interested in using this loop. My gut tells me not too many remember this song, or have even considered playing it again, so I’d rather save myself the work of mixing it down unless someone requests it.

ORS Music: Come Thou Fount (Acoustic) – 1 Take, 1 Mic Sessions

A couple Sundays ago my band came up with a new arrangement to Come Thou Fount before service. I really liked the feel and I had an idea of doing these live recording sessions where we’d do it acoustically gathered around a single mic. So last night all us family folk had a few hours at night, we setup a mic and pressed record. The take is far from perfect but I think still captures the heart and idea. I’m not sure where these “1 Take, 1 Mic Sessions” will take us, but I love the organic feel and it’s good for our band to unplug and sing as a family like this.

Interview with Chris Lizotte and Marc Ford (Part 2)

I sat down with Chris Lizotte and Marc Ford at the Burn Bright conference in Phoenix AZ to discuss worship, music and the church amongst other things. In Part 1 Chris and Marc talked about how they first met and started playing music together and Marc discussed how he’s changed as a musician since coming to know Jesus. Here in Part 2 I ask Chris about his journey of faith in his songwriting as he continues digging deeper into scripture in his life and song. Both Chris and Marc also tackle the topic of mentoring inside of the church and Marc comments on the encouragement Chris has been to him in this area.

Chris Lizotte has been a long time Vineyard worship leader and recording artist, he’s released 7 albums including his latest album Signal Hill Revival featuring Marc Ford.

Marc Ford is a guitarist as well as singer/songwriter and former lead guitarist for The Black Crowes. In addition to his solo work Ford has also played with the likes of Ben Harper and Ryan Bingham, Ford is also spending time producing out of his own studio as well as recording with Neptune Blues Club.

In Christ Alone is one of the most lyrically profound worship songs I’ve heard. This song, considered to be a modern hymn, speaks so richly and beautifully of the gospel. It’s one of my favorite worship songs ever written. However, the time and arrangement of the song I’ve never been crazy about. I’ve heard a lot of arrangements, and for me, the music never matched the intensity of the lyrics. Always felt like the music couldn’t support the weight of the lyrics, if that makes sense.

So this is an original arrangement of mine(with inspiration from Page CXVI on the time change) that attempts to support the lyrics a bit better. The biggest change being the time, it’s in 4/4 which I think really opens it up. Hopefully this arrangement is useful for others, details on arrangement are given once purchased. So take a listen and let me know what you think. I should also mention, the rhythm piano is more of a placeholder track to give you an idea on arrangement. Otherwise there’d be a lot of dead air up front. Of course when you purchase I can mute whichever tracks you want, or you can do it yourself with the Reason master.

New Creation is an incredible song from Dex Alexander and Fellowship Church. If you haven’t seen the video of their live performance make sure to check it out. I’ve had this in the queue to do for a long time, but it wasn’t until we decided to do this song for Easter that it rose to the top of the stack.

Fair warning, I really changed up the vibe on the intro and verses…it’s a true remix there. You can sing the same melody over it and hopefully get the feel for it. I also inserted a few more bars into the verse section to give space for an added vocal section we did. I don’t have a live recording of our performance yet to demonstrate our arrangement, but as always I have the arrangement file guiding you. This song has been on my to do list for some time and is the first song I’m doing as part of the Gospel Community Worship Project. I’ve always loved this song and been in a couple of Delirious’ concerts when they played it live and it was incredible. The arrangement here has the same instrumental hook that makes the song instantly recognizable.

I did make some changes to the end section, namely I don’t do the “there will come a day…” part. I just allow for some repeats on the “Hallelujah” tag. The loop here does have a bass line in it. Our Rising Sound – God of This City (Live, with loop)

I released the God of This City Loop in Aug of ’09 and I still get a lot of questions about how this mixes live. The easiest way to explain it is to just let you listen to us play it live. This is a live mix of my band (Our Rising Sound) playing God of This City this past Sunday at Life Connection Church. It’s far from perfect(my vocals stink and need to fix drum micing), but hopefully it will help those interested in the loop hear how we pull it off live.

Over the past couple years my heart has really been moved towards re-arranging hymns, due in large part to the influence of Mars Hill’s worship leaders but also due to a conviction on singing theologically rich lyrics. One of my favorite hymns is “The Solid Rock” by Edward Mote. I’ve done a couple versions of this song and always enjoyed E-pop’s version of this song, but on one particular listen it moved from appreciation to an urgency to do it.

Most of the time I try and respond to that urgency in my spirit, there are a lot of songs I have in the queue to loop so I have to prioritize in some way. So this arrangement is a version off of the E-pop arrangement. Same hook in the piano melody but used some different instrumentation, rhythm and added a more heavy instrumental section.

Adam Pasion Interview Part 2 – “Gypsy Girl” story

I recently sat down with Adam Pasion who’s new album “O Hear the Rattling” (iTunes) seriously impressed me. The music to me is best described as dark folk, very rich lyrically, with dark melodies and full folk string instrumentation and groove. I’ve not heard another Christian album like this at all, and by Christian album I just mean Adam is a Christian who wants to see Christ glorified in his music, but these aren’t necessarily corporate worship songs.

In part 2 of the interview we talk about the story behind the track “Gypsy Girl.”

I’ve written previously at how brilliant this song is and how more churches should be doing this song. The bridge for this song is one of the most powerful portions of song I’ve sung, very difficult to get through composed.

That bridge was the main reason I wanted to do a loop for this. I felt like that part could and should get huge. So the loop is really simple for most of it, just has an organ, some claps, little kick, shaker, cello, but then ramps up on the tag. I spent quite a while getting the proper back and forth shaker action instead of just the single forward action that pretty much all shaker samples use. I know it’s probably not all that impressive to anyone but I was really happy with the end result for the shaker.

You’ll notice my changes in the bridge section and you may also noticed I slowed it down. I like giving the verses a little more room so people don’t get lost in the lyrics.

Song release: “Live or No Longer Live” by Kyle Campos (Live)

This song has been a long, adventurous process. I didn’t write it as a corporate worship song, it actually came together after some wrestling I was doing with God over Lordship of my life. I spoke in a recent Sunday Set List at length about the background of the song but essentially dealt with me handing over my security to Jesus.

The song is based primarily out of Philippians 1, which was challenging to work out of. The text is supremely rich, just not the most melodic phrases to work with, so it was a challenge but I wanted to use it. This recording is from the 2nd time we ever played it live. There’s plenty left to do with the song arrangement wise, so this is pretty raw but I like to get a picture of where the song is heading first naturally before working on tighter arrangement details, loops and such. I really question my judgment releasing songs publicly that are so early in the process, but getting critique at this point is always helpful.

Adam Pasion Interview Part 1 (New music)

This song has been on the back burner for a long time for me. I never really dug any of the arrangements I heard, but I knew the song had some good remix potential. I finally got around to putting one together for this tune. I’ve always loved the words to this song and thought it was really a powerful song. The dominant portions of the loop I composed for it are this sort of rhythmic electronic sequence. They are layered throughout so that it hopefully doesn’t get over bearing. I leave room in the verses and pre-chorus, and even the early chorus is pretty open and simple in the loop.

Towards the end though each component comes together in the final chorus. I’m pleased with how it ended up coming together. When we play it live it’s heavy on electric guitar so the guitars add the rock bite to it that you might not pickup just listening to the loop.

This performance of “True Love” by Phil Wickham was recorded live at Life Connection Church in Phoenix AZ on 4-26-09. It was recorded using this modest setup and using the short intro version of the True Love loop released here on ORS. There is a lot of room for improvement and that’s the primary(currently only) reason we record our live sets, to see where we need to improve. So this is just my band being transparent to our process, a humbling adventure but I’m proud of the progress our band has made in a short time and look forward to improving together going forward.

True Love by Phil Wickham is truly an amazing song and it’s always been on my short list for songs to loop, but it shot to the top of the list when Easter planning started. Too bad I started planning late because this loop took me forever. Sunday Wrap-Up: “Ryan Delmore leads worship”

This past weekend we had Ryan Delmore out to lead worship for our Anthropology Men’s Conference. Ryan did an incredible job and was a huge blessing for our men. Ryan also stayed and led worship for our Sunday service and our entire congregation was so blessed and honored to have him. Everyone entered in right away, sang their guts out even to songs they didn’t know. It was a privilege for my band to play with Ryan and we had a blast hanging out with him for a few days.

If you haven’t yet heard Ryan’s music, then you can read my review of his record “The Spirit, the Water and the Blood“ and it has links to purchase. We did a video wrap up with Ryan but unfortunately it looks like it didn’t save to my HD for some reason, project is there but video file is not. It could be that I over-wrote it when my drummer Jon Utter and Ryan did their little tip of the hat to James Brown.

I think you enjoyed this video more than the wrap up anyway. Again HUGE thanks to Ryan Delmore, he’s an amazing friend, worship leader and man of God, awesome to be able to connect with him. I mixed a little worship sampler from the set, a minute or 2 from each song, entire set condensed to 10 minutes. So you can listen to that below. Here was the set:

I’ve been working on this loop for a few weeks and used it twice in service. I’ve been with-holding it’s release because I have a few more ideas that I want to try out before I ‘ll consider it done, but I figure why not expose that process. So I’m going to release this loop for Hosanna as version 1, when I complete it I’ll release another version and you can see the difference. I’ve made available 2 versions below, one with acoustic and the other without.

There’s a couple things to watch out for on this loop that differ from the album arrangement.

Intro starts with a pad, then drum pattern, then the piano riff comes in. Verse 1 starts at bar 35 (00:53)
The solo section is twice as long. I do a solo for the first half then we sing a tag that I wrote on the back half. Solo section comes in at bar 119 (3:05) and stops at bar 151 (3:55).

I think besides those 2 things I repeat sections as the album does. Don’t forget to rate the loop below and please comment with any questions or feedback you may have.

I wrote this song about a year and a half ago and it’s been a slow evolution from where it began. Lots of rewriting in every aspect of the song. I feel satisfied with where it’s settled. I’ve been working on a studio demo of it for a long time, so many false starts due to the rewriting. This past Sunday we recorded the set live through our modest FireStudio Project setup mostly for our own internal band uses. You have to listen to yourself to see where you stink.

The mix is pretty rough, lots of stuff we need equipment wise to get a decent live recording setup, but for a rough live demo, it’ll do. The song is about our lives as worship and love for Christ. I was tired of singing about it, praying about certain things and just ready to live it. Lyrics below and you can grab the How I Live loop here.

To my mind the best song to come out of New Life is Everlasting God. You won’t hear too many melodies better than this one, and the production is really top class. Glenn Packiam’s vocals on this always impressed me, his tone is fantastic on this. We do this song quite often at LCC and as far as corporate worship goes this is one of the more engaging ministry type songs we have in rotation.

I finally got around to programming a loop for one of my favorite Hillsong tunes, Lead Me to the Cross. This one took me a long time to get satisfied with. I knew I wanted to remix it some, I didn’t want to play it the same old way. So what I ended up doing was changing the drum rhythm and creating a sort of Radiohead In Rainbows odd downbeat thing happening. Our drummer Jonathan did a brilliant job getting a killer beat around this track, I’m sorry the rest of your teams don’t have my drummer.

I followed the album as far as sectional(verse/chorus/bridge) arrangement so that should make things easier for those thinking of using this. As you may or may not know I have a 3 piece band instrumentally, drums, bass and me on electric guitar, no acoustic guitar (ohhhhhh myyyyyy goshhhhhhhhh). So I have 2 versions of this loop, one with acoustic and one without for most of you out there who have live acoustic.
