This was recorded live at the Burn Bright conference here in Phoenix last year which I had the pleasure attending and blogging from. This was my favorite moment of the conference and really embodies what I still love about Vineyard worship. No pretense…none at all, just some great people, with some great talent laying their hearts out there in a beautiful and inspiring way.

And if I haven’t said it before, my friend Ryan Delmore has written here one of the best worship songs I’ve heard in the last 5 years or so. Doesn’t get much better than this tune, well done my friend. Chris, Mark, Kirsten and band killed it! Oh and James, yes you were layin down a mean bass

This was just one of my favorite times of worship ever, I don’t think that’s over stating it. First off this song is one of the greatest hymns ever written, lyrically unmatched in both creativity and power. It’s almost hard for me to believe it was written by man. Second, God was moving so powerfully amongst our body, we tried to end the song as planned and as you can hear the church didn’t let it end. So we end up bringing it back and singing it one more time through, it was just insane.

The mics that are picking up the church singing aren’t even meant to pickup crowd noise, they are in the back of the room pointing towards the stage for our in ear “house” mix. It was LOUD. Once again the performance is far from flawless, but I know there are many in our church that will want to have this moment captured. Love my church.

Frederick M. Lehman wrote Love of God in 1917, but borrowed portions from a very old Jewish poem(Haddamut) that was found written on the inside wall of once of the cells in an insane asylum in 1050. Out of the most desperate physical place came one of the most beautiful texts we have to sing.

Weekly Music Thirst: Bon Iver – “Bon Iver” a masterpiece

Bon Iver’s self titled album is one of this year’s most anticipated albums and it doesn’t disappoint. When this album start streaming for free a couple weeks before it’s June 21st release date I had my browser looping the album almost non stop. Now that I have the album I’m still listening to it on repeat.

This is one of the most moving and sonically brilliant records I’ve ever heard. It inspires, saddens, excites…you can be sure that you will be unable to listen in a pedestrian nature. Bon Iver brings you into each song and when it’s over it’s nearly impossible to shake, you want to start it all over.

I don’t know where Bon Iver might go from here, but it’s hard to see how this record isn’t the pinnacle of the band’s career. This record is quite simply a masterpiece that’s only outdone by the live performances. Buy the record, watch the live performance below and let your ears thank you later.

Audio: How we do instrumental Puritan prayer readings in service

For quite some time we’ve regularly been opening our services with a Puritan prayer reading. We do these readings over a variety of instrumental pieces, usually riff ideas that we’ve been playing around with that sometimes turn into full songs. In this case we just took a riff from one of the songs we were playing in the set, but a lot of you have asked to hear what these readings sound like, so here ya go.

This prayer was recorded live at Life Connection Church on 5/15/11 and is called Fullness In Christ and can be found in the book The Valley of Vision – A Collection of Puritan prayers

Early on I was toying with the idea of playing All the Bright Lights song “The Door” for our Easter service. I didn’t know how it would quite work, it being 95% instrumental. I also knew I wanted to have my man Lee Green rhyme at some point in the service…eventually my slow brain realized we could blend the two together.

So Lee Green wrote a rhyme around the entire Gospel story and we used The Door as the instrumentation behind it. You’ll have to forgive some of the instrumentation mistakes, I hope it doesn’t ruin Lee’s incredible, powerful, convicting and moving words. Hopefully we’ll be doing more collaborating going forward, love me some Lee Green!

Video from Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Dhani Harrison and Prince paying tribute to George Harrison with While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Prince absolutely wrecks the place. I love the look on Petty’s face as Prince shreds right in front of him. Unbelievable.

Page CXVI Live at Life Connection Church April 15th 2011

I’m excited and honored to bring Page CXVI to Life Connection Church on April 15th 2011. If you are a regular reader of this blog you’ve probably noticed we do some of their hymn arrangements in our Sunday sets and links to their Hymn albums (Hymns I, II and III) have been linked on the sidebar. I also gave them second place in my Top 5 Modern Hymn Arrangements post back in July with their arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic (brilliant arrangement).

This band has an incredible ear and sensibility for arranging hymns in a fresh and creative way that accents the beauty and power of hymns. Page CXVI will be performing a Night of Hymns with us and I fully expect it to be an incredible night of worship. I hope many of you are able to join us in worship. ORS Music: Come Thou Fount (Acoustic) – 1 Take, 1 Mic Sessions

A couple Sundays ago my band came up with a new arrangement to Come Thou Fount before service. I really liked the feel and I had an idea of doing these live recording sessions where we’d do it acoustically gathered around a single mic. So last night all us family folk had a few hours at night, we setup a mic and pressed record. The take is far from perfect but I think still captures the heart and idea. I’m not sure where these “1 Take, 1 Mic Sessions” will take us, but I love the organic feel and it’s good for our band to unplug and sing as a family like this.

As the Worship Pastor at LCC(Life Connection Church) I handle the vision and strategy for all the music and arts. One aspect of that vision that I laid out 3-4 years ago was the building of multiple worship bands. Seemed silly at that time with the size of our church and how many(or how few) musicians we had, but that was the vision. It’s been incredible to see God bring together like minded and incredibly talented musicians to this church and the formation of another band, Green House. I’m so blessed by the community of musicians and artists we have in LCC, we are truly family.

This past week LCC was led in worship by Green House and I decided to grab just a little video on a flip cam. It was originally intended for just our internal uses to evaluate ourselves (hence the low audio quality through the flip cam mic), but I was just so blown away by their performance and arrangement of this song I had to share. I wrote this song Live or No Longer Live in and for LCC a couple years ago, I posted previously about that story behind this song. Ish Jimenez, leader of Green House, did such an incredible job on this arrangement, it’s humbling and encouraging to have another band arrange your song and do it so incredibly well. Not to mention the performance, vocally insane!

Our Rising Sound – God of This City (Live, with loop)

I released the God of This City Loop in Aug of ’09 and I still get a lot of questions about how this mixes live. The easiest way to explain it is to just let you listen to us play it live. This is a live mix of my band (Our Rising Sound) playing God of This City this past Sunday at Life Connection Church. It’s far from perfect(my vocals stink and need to fix drum micing), but hopefully it will help those interested in the loop hear how we pull it off live.

One of the great joys of Direct TV is my season pass for Jools Holland. On this occasion they had a pretty packed lineup, John Legend, Amy Winehouse, The Raconteurs and Muse. Hands down, Raconteurs stole the show, their performance of Broken Boy Soldier was incredible. Enjoy.

This song has been a long, adventurous process. I didn’t write it as a corporate worship song, it actually came together after some wrestling I was doing with God over Lordship of my life. I spoke in a recent Sunday Set List at length about the background of the song but essentially dealt with me handing over my security to Jesus.

The song is based primarily out of Philippians 1, which was challenging to work out of. The text is supremely rich, just not the most melodic phrases to work with, so it was a challenge but I wanted to use it. This recording is from the 2nd time we ever played it live. There’s plenty left to do with the song arrangement wise, so this is pretty raw but I like to get a picture of where the song is heading first naturally before working on tighter arrangement details, loops and such. I really question my judgment releasing songs publicly that are so early in the process, but getting critique at this point is always helpful.

This performance of “True Love” by Phil Wickham was recorded live at Life Connection Church in Phoenix AZ on 4-26-09. It was recorded using this modest setup and using the short intro version of the True Love loop released here on ORS. There is a lot of room for improvement and that’s the primary(currently only) reason we record our live sets, to see where we need to improve. So this is just my band being transparent to our process, a humbling adventure but I’m proud of the progress our band has made in a short time and look forward to improving together going forward.
