Michael Guglielmucci, author of “Healer”, exposed as fraud
Tagged Under : Healer, Hillsong, Lakeland, Michael Guglielmucci, music, news, Todd Bentley, worship
This has been a rough couple weeks for the church. First we have Todd Bentley stepping down due to marital problems and now his sexual sin being exposed. I have not posted anything on Todd Bentley, not because I don’t have strong feelings about it, but because I want to frame it in context to worship. I don’t want to write another piece on how messed up the whole Lakeland “outpouring” situation is, that’s been done. I’m working on a post so stay tuned on that front.
Now comes news that Michael Guglielmucci totally lied and made up his story of terminal illness. I don’t know where Hillsong goes from here, but I think they have to obviously take a long hard look at how the evaluate those whom they put on their biggest stage. A story of terminal illness can’t be that hard to checkout unless he had a team of doctor’s in on the lie.
I haven’t really gathered my thoughts on this yet, I’m just currently very disappointed, saddened and frustrated for the hurt this has caused. I hope you join me in praying for Michael and his family, Hillsong church and the thousands of those who have been impacted by this song. I’ve heard from several worship leaders who will continue to play this song in worship and I think that’s a wonderful thing. This song isn’t a story about Michael’s sickness or lack thereof, it’s a story and proclamation of God’s power. Perhaps this situation will make it even more evident in this song of our need for God’s healing power.
UPDATE: Michael’s father releases statement of his son’s confession.

I wrote about this. Really, just a sad thing.
this is so insane and just makes no sense to me. my husband is believing for healing for cancer and now I know why he didn’t like watching this video.
Here in So Cal, Hillsong planted a church called ‘Newport Church’. A friend was getting plugged into ministry there and was going through their small group leader training. The friend was instructed at the training that they were at no time allowed to pray or read from the bible. Friend decided to leave that church. Curious things from those guys recently.
If people can and want tp keep worshiping with this song they should. Sometimes what we intend for evil God can work for good and his purposes.
Php 1:15-18: Some proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. These proclaim Christ out of love, knowing that I have been put here for the defense of the gospel; the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but intending to increase my suffering in my imprisonment. What does it matter? Just this, that Christ is proclaimed in every way, whether out of false motives or true; and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,
Nan: As long as your husband’s faith is in Jesus and not that song he is in good hands. Your family is in my prayers.
Scott: Quite a poignant verse, great stuff.
Just curious how you got “sexual sin” from “emotional involvement” in regard to Bentley’s recent stumble with a female staffer. This sort of unsubstantiated statement is where brother-damaging gossip comes from.
“I hope you join me in praying for Michael and his family, Hillsong church and the thousands of those who have been impacted by this song.”
Wouldn’t we have better things to pray for? Like “feed the hungry”, “stop Global Warming”, & “don’t let McCain win”? Honestly, why would I pray for a fraud when I have such more important matters?
To answer the other anonymous person… I seriously doubt that your friend was instructed not to pray or read from the bible. I have many friends that attend and serve at Newport and that just doesn’t sound like something that would be said there.
And to answer the blog…
When I lived in Australia I attended and served at Hillsong Church, so I know these people.
And let me tell you it is NOT easy to be elevated to such heights of singing at album recording.
Most of the people have been involved for years, served and sowed into the church. Been in choir several times before they were asked to sing on album.
So believe me when I say that Hillsong has a good system in place when it comes to choosing who gets to go on their platform.
If you read the letter from George A. (General manager of Hillsong) which is printed in several articles around the www, even Michael’s wife wasn’t aware of the deception.
People are great at hiding things, but in the Kingdom of God there are no secrets, so in the end, if someone is hiding something, it will come up to the surface.
Sadly it usually happens once people have gained great responsibility and are in the lime light.
So in light of these news…I just encourage you guys to pray, pray for Mike, his family, for the churches involved etc.
And the song, even though it might not have been written in “truth” … it still is an amazing song. And it doesn’t make the words any less true.
“Jesus you’re all I need”
Amy: I get it from the same place Fresh Fire gets it. They first said no sexual sin, then they had to release a statement again after more was revealed. What is “inappropriate emotional involvement” but lust of the heart, has he not committed adultery in his heart? You may be right, he might have not done the physical deed (although I wouldn’t be surprised if that comes out soon) but he certainly committed it in his heart. But I link to the very article so I’m not trying to mislead, everyone can read for themselves.
Telepathic: Why not pray for all of that(except the political side we should pray for both men)? If you really are praying 24/7 for the other things and have no more time than good for you, except you had time to write this comment so I probably don’t think that’s true.
We are praying for those who’s faith is being tested. The test alwasy comes. The man may have lied about himself but there was no lie in the song. God is a healer. If this man yields to God he will be truly healed of what truly ails him. God healed my brother of being a totally quadraplegic (paralized from the neck down) after a diving accident. He didn’t move for over 4 months and was reduced to skin and bones. And we believed and God healed. He is now married, has two kids and works for the hospital where God did the miracle. It’s just so hard to keep our eyes off man and keep them on God. One thing we know for sure is that love never fails. God is love. I have been struggling recently with my health. The song came at a good time for me. It’s the right confession for my present situation. I don’t know Mike G but I know my God and he’s the one I am counting on to heal me. Peace on your hearts….
Just wanted to comment on something you said in the original blog.
Can’t be that hard to check out a terminal cancer story. In theory true…. but….
We need to look deeper into our western culture to see why this happened. Westerners have this cultural boundaries between what is public and what is private. Things in public, such as what is your job, where do you live, are free to be asked by anyone.
Things like how is your ‘illness’ must be asked by a trusted person, and because it is within the realm of the ‘private’ world the person is free not to give anything away.
Westerners are first of all autonomous (self-ruling) free individuals, and any claim on them by the community is secondary.
Whereas many (most) other cultures, we are first part of the community, then an individual, there is no real sense of this public/private dichotomy.
We need to look at our culture, and ask ourselves why do we not feel we can connect at much deeper levels.
The mere fact that his wife didn’t even know draws our attention too some serious inadequecies in our culture. The bible says bear one anothers burdens, how can people do that if that don’t share them in the first place.
We are in a sad place.
[...] Guglielmucci’s father released a statement in efforts to explain the recent news that Michael’s terminal cancer was faked. I can’t begin to understand what his family is going through. It really is a tragic [...]
First I’ve heard of this… Sickens me, but not in disgust, just at our so-fallen condition. Feel a lot of compassion for him… So very sad. And Todd Bentley, too! Lately, a lot of “scandals”- what’s going on with the church?
…AND I so agree with Adrian’s comment… Obviously Mike G told people he had cancer, and people chose to respect his privacy (hmm)… He went to doctors’ apps ALONE? Someone who supposedly had cancer??
