Just published a new poll asking What responsibility to worship leaders have with their tatoos? You can select multiple answers. I’m really interested in peoples thoughts on this. Please answer the poll and comment on this post with your thoughts and hopefully you have some scripture to back up your position. (Wondering if I should just post Leviticus 19:28Leviticus 19:28

here and save everyone the trouble). Nah, I’ll let each prepare themselves. I’ll wait to post my position after I get some good responses.

Wow, this is a great question. I have recently changed my views on tattoos and actually have been considering getting one but its a really big decision. In doing some research on what the bible has to say about tattoos the evidence is relatively inconclusive. Both sides make a pretty convincing argument as to why its absolutely not okay to get a tattoo as a Christian or the flip side which I’m currently going with, that is is fine to get a tattoo as a Christian. Now, there are many caveats to that statement and obviously the meaning, content, artwork, etc. of the tattoo would come in to play when deciding if you should have something permanently drawn on your body but I would say that my current vote would be a worship leader or any Christian for that matter should be able to show their tattoos if they are God honoring.
I have no problem with worship leaders having tattoos and showing them. After reading this article I still don’t have a problem with it. I was trying to think how I would respond to Mr. Hurd’s comments. Well I can’t, he makes a lot of great points to why its not right. And to be honest he responded to many of my personal views on how tattoos can be used. So my inner battle is “my conscious” is that cleared? or am I constantly battling if it’s right or wrong? I figure the time and energy spent to argue if it’s wrong or right is just taking too much time and distracts from the main purpose of why we are here, for salvation of the lost. Here is one last thought, if God hasn’t told you to get one, and you do, then are you doing it for the sake of fitting in? or just disobedience? http://www.fortifyingthefamily.com/jon.htm Here is the article I read.
I think you need to look at the bible as a whole, I think people can take a verse out of context, if you refer to Lev 19:28 regarding tattoos then you must also look at Lev 19:27 about not shaving the sides of your hair or trimming your beard! There must have been cultural reasons like in 1 Tim 2:17 about women braiding their hair or wearing gold or expensive clothes, At that time the prostitues would have dressed like that, So, what was it saying for that time? Then, look at what is is saying for this time? Well, its about dressing modestly, not about how much our clothes are or if we wear gold or have braids. Jesus summarised all the ‘rules’ when he said love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself. Lets concentrate on doing that and then when we’ve cracked that one, I don’t think having a tattoo or not really matters!?
